DR. TOM PAYNE (UK)
Director General of Doppelgangster, Tom Payne’s recent performance work for the company has appeared in Experimentica’15 (Chapter Arts, Cardiff); ArtCOP21 (La Generale, Paris); COP21 (Grand Palais, Paris); Site2/Safle2 Festival (AAC, Aberyswyth), VAULT Festival (Vaults, London), and online at doppelgangster.com

A performer, musician, filmmaker, facilitator, teacher, researcher and freelance digital strategy consultant. Tom has worked with NTW variously as a performer (The Persians), audio visual-technician (Coriolan/us 2012) and as part of a research development team (Outdoors 2011). He has trained with Dead Good Guides and Eddie Ladd and in 2012 he undertook a yearlong one to one training programme with the Wales based movement artist Simon Whitehead. Tom’s film work includes the co-creation of the documentary feature Notes From the Edge of the East (2010) and Standing on the Edge (2011) a short series of online magazine programmes produced in collaboration with Culture Colony.
In 2012 Tom transformed a former milking parlour in Ty’n yr Helyg Barn into a space for performance. The barn provides the setting for an on-going ritual and ceremonial practice through which he seeks to provide a safe space for conversations about sustainability. His work at Ty’n yr Helyg Barn featured prominently in Emergence’s recent Culture Shift Report, How Artists are Responding to Sustainability in Wales (2014). Tom Payne can toss a coin with 100% accuracy and has done this live in front of a paying audience.

Fear the Sun (Installation)

20

An installation work by Sandra Fiona Long.

Twenty one years ago the first UN Climate Change Conference aka ‘Conference of Parties’ (COP) was held, in Berlin, Germany. In her lounge room in Melbourne, Australia; Sandra connected over forty heaters together despite it only being late March.

Twenty-one years later and the COP has continued to offer empty promises, broken agreements, and corporate green-washing, so Sandra recreates her lounge room for HOT!HOT!HOT! Festival and invites you to do nothing in the room.

Definitely don’t come in and try to be active; or resist; or to rebel in anyway against her extravagant display of power.

EDITORS NOTE: Sandra says there were far less than 40 heaters and not to believe any of this flashy, electric, brilliant, shiny, fierce, top-range, super-charged, white-hot, powerful marketing copy!

One Tonne Fruit Bowl

PERFORMED AND CREATED BY

HUGH SILITOE + HOWLING SPOON (SCOTLAND)

The most central question is – will it be okay for fruit and veg to be thrown around in the space? Of course, I’ll clean up after, but flying kiwis/strawberries/aubergines are key. There will be several pieces – the order of which will be determined by the fruit and veg on the night. The spoon will make sure this runs smoothly. Still finalizing a list of props that could be useful – but for now is there likely to be any way of obtaining something that might pass as a huge fruit bowl – maybe a bathtub, or paddling pool, or strong round box? It would need to be able to fit a human in it. ALSO – attached is an image inspired by the new show idea of a spoon full of goodies. I’m off to Tokyo tomorrow, excited to catch up soon, sad to miss some of HHH, but hope it kicks off explosively. Do you need more info from me? Like a wee 100 word blurb or anything like that? Let me know and I’ll get onto it. Hugh

7 in Paradise

One day everyone will get 15 minutes of fame, and seven minutes in paradise.

But there is a tipping point, and some things can’t be undone.

Jane Grimley was born in Lismore, New South Wales and is a performance maker and activist. She is interested in voyeurism, apathy and intimacy.

She makes theatrical work that blurs the personal and performative in confronting and exciting works on a small scale. She has made a show in a moving car, a football stadium and now a dysfunctional lift.

or

Jane Grimley is an artist who works across theatre and live art. A director and maker she has presented works at Sydney’s performance space, Brisbane’s MetroArts and Fringe festivals across Australia. The Co Artistic Director of the Crack Theatre Festival 2011 – 2012, she has also performed in works at the Next Wave festival, NRLA Glasgow, Bremen and Berlin. She has worked with Australian Performance Exchange, Version 1.0, Australian, Theatre of the Deaf. She has been an apprentice clown and has done short courses through The Dramatherapy Centre, NIDA and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. WORK BITCH

Arts funding has been cut. Art schools don’t teach you how to get a job or how to write a grant application. Art makers have dedicated their life to abject poverty. This is not a real job. You will pay to show us your work. Describe a time where you did a degree that has no material value. It’s a struggle, it’s a war, and there’s nothing that anyone’s giving. But there is a way out. In the words of the esteemed prophet Britney Spears: “You wanna Bugatti? You wanna Maserati? You better work bitch.” Luke Devine takes us through his top 3 fave jobs as an artist, from collecting actual garbage at the HCC to describing a different kind of trash at the NGV. Watch as Devine details how a dual career in government jobs has prevented him from getting on top of his creative game. Listen as his mother’s capitalist mantra is embodied by the instructions delivered in Britney Spears proletariat dirge Work Bitch. The very same orders Britney’s own mother gave her from the age of 8. Laugh, cry and troll because other people’s misfortunes are really the only thing that can make your dead soul feel better.

FESTIVAL DIRECTOR ‘Tobias Manderson-Galvin’ SAYS

Who the hell knows at this point really it’s just a reference to a Britney Spears song. Did you even see Luke’s last phenomenal show? I’m of the understanding that you have to spend an hour with an audience in a room and it’s not even a theatre it’s genuinely just a room in a house like any other empty, haunted, abandonded house. It’s also about how ACMI is probably a dangerous, secret society; but then again nah it’s probably nothing to worry about how they dont have emails or phone numbers on their website and they dont even have a front door in their building.

“The writing alone is so finely crafted that it would be a shame not to extend it into a long-form memoir for publication.”

Arts hub

“His words hit home for many of us and opened the window to what small towns can really be like for the rest.”

Melbourne Arts Club

“It was less funny than appalling.”

B Movies Live!

It’s November 1964: In a Long Island studio, a hot mess of performers film the new science fiction movie… ‘Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster’. Martians have arrived on Earth with the sole purpose of kidnapping WOMEN! to continue the breeding stock of their dying planet!

In barely 90 chaotic minutes, as scripts fly, these DIY trashbags bring the 60s B-grade movie to life with rubbish props, costumes, special effects, terror, fallen pieces of popcorn, and then they destroy it all over again.

ON B-MOVIES LIVE

“one of those truly quirky productions”
“quirky, camp” “a lot of fun”
“a silly show”
“a B-movie science fiction feat that is a must-see”
“a must-see for B-movie fans”
“Applause signs and tin foil at the ready – this is going to get ridiculous”
“Jam packed with sci-fi cliches, awful special effects, and tropes galore”

THOUGHTS FROM
THE ARTIST

I noticed a trend was happening in the USA – musical adaptations of classic B-grade films. Rather than singing zombies, I wanted to create an immersive theatre piece. Strip the movie back, take away the screen, use the original screenplay as a starting point, and build a live show from there. It would be a show which harked back to children’s pantomimes where you boo-ed the villains and applauded the heroes.I have a fondness for these 50s and 60s B movies and our treatment takes a tongue-in-cheek look back at a different time in movie making. – Kristian Fletcher

PONY

A durational performance work by Kerith Manderson-Galvin

Fresh and a little crumpled from Dark Mofo’s Blacklist, PONY embarks on a new course- a one hour long race in an elevator to nowhere. “I kept thinking, oh my god. I’m just a little girl in a pony suit.”

PONY is ripped off her own work of plagiarism “Being Dead (Don Quixote)” (Midsumma, Melba Spiegeltent 2015, Summer Nights Fringe World PICA) in collaboration with pony-head maker Tobias Manderson-Galvin and composer Jules Pascoe.

PONY is a work of commitment to the failures and fireworks of femininity. Stay for the race or walk on by 8pm-9pm, the elevator in Siteworks for MKA’s Hot Hot Hot Festival.

**PONY is also a chance for Kerith Manderson-Galvin to live her primary school friend’s life long dream of growing up to be a horse.
